About Hands-On Heritage Northern Ireland

Hands-On Heritage provides tools that enable individuals and communities to take the lead in activities which highlight, protect and regenerate Northern Ireland’s historic built environment

Evidence shows that community support for the value of the historic environment, and its protection, is strong. When a building is under immediate threat public engagement spikes – but this often comes too late. Every new loss reinforces the perception that individuals and communities are powerless to effect change. Northern Ireland urgently needs a means by which ordinary people can engage in a participative, consistently accessible and quantifiable way with the protection of our heritage, local identity and pride of place.

There is an opportunity to combine traditional methods of outreach with new technologies in the form of an integrated framework for public engagement. The Hands-On Heritage project (HOH) will see the development of this framework, helping individuals and communities take the lead in activities which highlight, protect and regenerate Northern Ireland’s historic built environment.
